REGION 5-AAAAA

REGION 5-AAAAA

CAMPBELL LADY SPARTANS

Head Coach: Jayme Burleson

Assistant Coach (s): Jade Forrester

2006 record: 2-21

College Prospects: None supplied

Returning starters: 1B Sara Carruthers (So., 5-6); C Melissa Guo (So., 5-1); U Lucy Dixon (Sr., 5-7); OF Courtney Caldwell (So., 5-8); RF Keysha Copeland (So., 5-5)

Other returning players: None supplied

Top newcomers: C/OF ScAndrea Maddox (Sr., 5-5)

Season outlook: Campbell was very young last year, starting as many as four freshmen last season. The team improved throughout the season, and coach Jayme Burleson hopes the Lady Spartans continue to improve this fall. The team will still be young, but the good news is that Campbells young talent is a year older.

ETOWAH LADY EAGLES

Head Coach: David Childress

Assistant Coach (s): Gordan Swordsma, Kelly MacArthur, Bobby Henson

2006 record: 20-10

College Prospects: 1B Tyler Miller (Sr., 5-9)

Other returning players: RHP Rachel Schmelzer (So., 5-10); C Elle Meyer (Jr., 5-6)

Top newcomers: None supplied

Season outlook: The Lady Eagles just missed the postseason last year. Etowah, with nine returning starters, should be in the postseason chase this fall. There is a wealth of returning talent, including junior third-baseman Haleigh Dickey (.541 avg., 6 2B, 3 3B, 23 RBIs). If Etowah can find some more pitchers to compliment senior Amber Barnes, the Lady Eagles could be very strong.

HARRISON LADY HOYAS

2006 record: 24-15

College Prospects: 2B Sara Stukes (Sr., 5-9); 3B Jessie Homesley (Sr., 5-5); OF Casey Jo Matthews (Sr., 5-4)

Season outlook: There is enough returning talent for the Lady Hoyas to make another run at a postseason berth. Eight starters are back, including a solid nucleus of offensive performers. That group includes junior Erin Nesbit (.354 avg., 20 RBIs) and senior Jessie Homesley (.304 avg., 1 HR). The pitching staff, however, lacks experience.

Top newcomers: None supplied

Season outlook: The defending Region 5-AAAAA runner-ups should pick up from where they left off last season. The Lady Mustangs have a wealth of returning talent, including offensive catalysts Kristin Marko (.511 avg., 5 2B, 31 RBIs), Jennifer Fenton (.471 avg., 3 3B, 20 RBIs) and Ashley Pauly (.377 avg., 2 2B, 17 RBIs). Three of the teams top pitchers in Tatum Vanloan (7-2, 0.85 ERA), Kristy Rodriguez (2-2, 1.61 ERA) and Brittany Lundgren (4-2, 0.51 ERA) also return.

There is a wealth of returning talent looking for their chance to step into the spotlight. In addition, a talented group of freshmen and sophomores could also contend for playing time,

Season outlook: North Cobb should be in the hunt for a postseason berth as six returning starters are back. Offense should be a strength as Bailey Arnaud (.469 avg.), Kaitlin Harris (.405 avg.), Kristin Stoll (.413 avg.) and Audrey Mason (.461 avg.) each batted .400 or better. Mason is the teams top returning pitcher after posting a 10-6 record in 2006.

SOUTH COBB LADY EAGLES

Head Coach: Jamie Eckstein

Assistant Coach (s): Jay Chapman, Kim Fortenberry

2006 record: 2-17

Other returning players: 2B Holly Kelley (Jr.)

Top newcomers: 3B Christina Gilstrap (Fr.); 1B Ashley Joos (Fr.)

Season outlook: South Cobb had a tough season in 2006, breaking in several new coaches and undergoing several changes. The Lady Eagles should improve significantly this fall, but the team will still be very young. The good news is that senior Lauren Fite, the teams leader in RBIs last season, returns to lead a youthful team. The bulk of the talent rests in the junior and sophomore classes.

Other returning players: OF Alyssa Merendo (So., 5-3); OF/3B/1B Carrie Williams (Jr., 5-9)

Top newcomers: None supplied

Season outlook: The defending state champs have seven starters returning, including Class AAAAA player of the year Jessica Symanski (.359 avg., 8 2B, 28 RBIs) at shortstop. Catcher Tori Moody, one of the states best, returns behind the plate, while a pair of standout pitchers in Jessica Martin (5-0, 1.69 ERA) and Nikki Roddy both return. The Lady Wolverines could be the classifications team to beat again.
